Going through some poetry I wrote varying amounts of multiple years ago, I'm offended by its grammatical errors and clear lack of talent, yet it makes me realize I am largely the same (with perhaps a few more shades of gray sandwiched between my abstract concepts of extremes [and also my physical extremities?]). This post is more of a self-indulgent documentation of the self.
1. For example, the following demonstrates my unchanging pretension and egotism:
"My Dearest"
My dearest one, my heart apart,
My love is yours alone.
Air is fresher; seas are bluer;
My death do you postpone.
Tears are unbeknownst to me
Except in times of bliss.
Hand in hand we walk the earth,
Forgetting all but this.
Never shall I say farewell.
Your side is where I’ll be.
Now we are entwined as one,
My dearest little Me.
2. This one had a prompt ("Wouldn't it be great if..."), but apparently no one informed me of the subjunctive! Furthermore, I'm not sure if the original had any punctuation. Also note the pattern of bluer/cleaner/fresher/greener mimicked by the previous poem which is likely much more recent. Yet what I choose to draw from this is that I was already quite a hippie by the age of 9...
"Wouldn't it be great if"
Wouldn’t it be great if the skies were bluer and the seas were cleaner
If there was a solution to pollution
And the grass was greener
If everyone was happy with what they had
But the poor would get a little more
If the animals had much spacious and gracious land
Then the world would be so grand
3. Finally, I'll end with proofs of my tendency towards negativity/pessimism/morbidity and my sad attempts at creating meaning:
"Time"
I watch as time rushes past,
Pulling me along by my chains.
Each unit is both first and last,
Indifferent to joys and pains.
Dragging me continuously
While my youth is stripped away,
Until my youth is gone from me
Time mandates my everyday.
"A Final Request"
When I in myself am no longer possessed,
When waste is naught but a statue,
When spirit be gone from my bodily pawn,
When stone cannot do what pray that do,
Let fiery flames feast ‘pon froze flesh
And kill flint which once used to live!
For I’ll not have eyes left alone with demise
To stare down and yet not forgive.
I’ll not have fair looks at the end of my book,
For look I will have none at all!
Let fire devour with all of its power
And make me no porcelain doll.
I’ll be remembered in burning red embers
As the (flame of) (engulfed me in) life.
Do not deny me nor try to defy me,
For I’ll give those maggots the knife!
"Life Beheld"
Death can’t be so simple,
For life is too complex.
The end should be as great
As the start which it reflects.
Perhaps it’s not the grandeur,
Or the death in dancing flame,
But the life that one has given
In the scheme of the Grand Game.
A time-enabled exit
With one swift final show
Doesn’t mean it’s over,
For that life is man’s to know.
And on that note, you just lost the game.

my close approximation of reality
no longer near, but far,
farther and farther away,
a way out, or a lost grip?
reverberating/stretching/twisting/undulating/vibratingvexingvortexes
variable assumptions have all been violated. enter the void.

Urk's Afternoon Tea Album Review: Kid A
On Today's Installment...
Artist: Radiohead
Album: Kid A
Year: 2000
The album opens with Everything In Its Right Place, and the crescendo to "There are two colors in my head" is pretty much brilliant electronica/hipster bullshit. Kid A sounds like a creepy distorted Rugrats theme, which is also somehow catchy. Although the contrast between the speaking rhythm and the music beat is jarring at times, I feel this is a necessary component to the collection of contrasts on the album. Next, the bassline of The National Anthem blows me right away. This song manages to be earthy (brassy and bass-y) and spaceage at the same time. Thom wails, "so alone," but I'm like, "yeah, right, it took quite a few musicians to make that song." Then, How to Disappear Completely gives me thoughts of "Ceci n'est pas une pipe." Thom's listing words but apparently it's not real/doesn't exist, so I'm not sure what is really going on. True story. Treefingers speaks to me and it says, "Yes, you are here, experiencing this now." The next song, Optimistic, almost sounds like Radiohead. I'm impressed. With In Limbo I find it eerie to be told, "You're living in a fantasy world," over layers of spacey electronic sounds. I approve. Idioteque is the most upbeat song on the album, although the lyrics aren't any less depressing. I, too, laugh until my head comes off. It's like, now I'm being assured that this is really happening, but can I trust this narrator? Probably not. This song is a personal favorite. The transition to Morning Bell is perfect, and Morning Bell conveys a plethora of emotions. I appreciate the ability to go from joyous/loud to creepy/quiet. Finally, Motion Picture Soundtrack is what it says it is. Overall, this album assures us of the randomness of our universe, but also of its beauty.

greatness
passing by, she bared her teeth and laughed quietly, i hope not to herself, but because in that moment of eye contact the world's true form revealed itself and the absurdity was too great

seek and destroy
seeking, thinking
towards an abstract--joy;
hitting concrete.
because, you see,
my eyes cannot; wait,
stumbled upon.
ruin, pillage
all; never to find
place permanence.
some see set sail a Sea King seeking serendipity
towards an abstract--joy;
hitting concrete.
because, you see,
my eyes cannot; wait,
stumbled upon.
ruin, pillage
all; never to find

I had a drink the other day
I had a lot to say
And I said:
You will come down soon, too
You will come down too soon

the post-self self
like a stop motion flag unfurling,
a flower unfolding in time-lapsed film,
slow lorising into the future,
i opened and inverted into myself.

sex in the air
Nothing on the radio could be better than these lines:
"'Cause I may be bad, but I'm perfectly good at it/Sex in the air, I don't care, I love the smell of it"
"'Cause I may be bad, but I'm perfectly good at it/Sex in the air, I don't care, I love the smell of it"
On the edge of last friday night.
what the hell is this video/song... it's a combination of rebecca black's "friday" (in that it describes everything that happens on a friday) and the 80s sax solo from lady gaga's "edge of glory". except that it tries to excuse itself by being self-referential and having rebecca black make a cameo appearance along with a slew of other people (Katy Perry's 'Last Friday Night' Invite Thrills Hanson). kenny g made a cameo appearance as the 80s sax soloist. i'm slightly offended by the arrogance of perry trying to outdo lady gaga and impinge on her pop culture territory.

sexting
A clip about Elisabeth Hasselbeck's special on sexting:
UGH I am SO offended. She says her entire sample of students had been asked to sext. How is that supposed to make me, someone who has never been asked to sext, feel? Now I feel like shit. Thanks, Elisabeth.

Another reason to love biology
Biology explores the complexity of life, which often seems far too great to grasp all at once. Every level, from micro to macro, is complex in its own right, yet all systems (molecular, cellular, organismal, ecological, etc.) are integrated as a whole, confounding things even more. Since every system has many variables as a result of complex pathways, there is also a great deal of variation, again, at all levels (individual, species, population, community, etc.). The easiest example of this is a point mutation. But think about developmental processes, epigenetics, and all the other factors that go into making life.
Another reason to love biology is that such widespread variation, which is necessary for the survival of life, disproves all cultural notions, stereotypes, and categories we've created. By definition, these social constructs assemble artificial parameters around groups of individuals while masking high levels of variation/diversity.
Life is, simply, awesome. Let's not simplify it so as to only stand in awe. Let's dive right in and that will blow our minds even more.

Moti-fail
Despite listening to these popular songs quite frequently, I have yet to find motivation to do much of anything.
P!nk "Raise Your Glass"
Ke$ha "We R Who We R"
Katy Perry "Firework"
P!nk "Fuckin' Perfect"
With such lyrics as "All my underdogs,/We will never be never be anything but loud/And nitty gritty dirty little freaks" and "Hot and dangerous/If you're one of us then roll with us/'Cause we make the hipsters fall in love/When we got our hot pants on and up," you'd think I'd be empowered to join the pop music scene and revolutionize dancing as we know it! It's so inclusive, so inviting. When I'm told, "You don't have to feel like a waste of space/You're original, cannot be replaced" and "Pretty pretty please, if you ever ever feel like you're nothing/You're fuckin' perfect to me," you'd think I'd feel so fucking splendid and beautiful because they're talking directly to me. The songs should make me feel unique but not alone, special but part of a group. Instead I feel like PMSing like a bitch. Katy Perry would know.
