Another reason to love biology

Biology explores the complexity of life, which often seems far too great to grasp all at once. Every level, from micro to macro, is complex in its own right, yet all systems (molecular, cellular, organismal, ecological, etc.) are integrated as a whole, confounding things even more. Since every system has many variables as a result of complex pathways, there is also a great deal of variation, again, at all levels (individual, species, population, community, etc.). The easiest example of this is a point mutation. But think about developmental processes, epigenetics, and all the other factors that go into making life.

Another reason to love biology is that such widespread variation, which is necessary for the survival of life, disproves all cultural notions, stereotypes, and categories we've created. By definition, these social constructs assemble artificial parameters around groups of individuals while masking high levels of variation/diversity.

Life is, simply, awesome. Let's not simplify it so as to only stand in awe. Let's dive right in and that will blow our minds even more.

Moti-fail

Despite listening to these popular songs quite frequently, I have yet to find motivation to do much of anything.

P!nk "Raise Your Glass"

Ke$ha "We R Who We R"

Katy Perry "Firework"

P!nk "Fuckin' Perfect"

With such lyrics as "All my underdogs,/We will never be never be anything but loud/And nitty gritty dirty little freaks" and "Hot and dangerous/If you're one of us then roll with us/'Cause we make the hipsters fall in love/When we got our hot pants on and up," you'd think I'd be empowered to join the pop music scene and revolutionize dancing as we know it! It's so inclusive, so inviting. When I'm told, "You don't have to feel like a waste of space/You're original, cannot be replaced" and "Pretty pretty please, if you ever ever feel like you're nothing/You're fuckin' perfect to me," you'd think I'd feel so fucking splendid and beautiful because they're talking directly to me. The songs should make me feel unique but not alone, special but part of a group. Instead I feel like PMSing like a bitch. Katy Perry would know.
